Review: Royal Betrothal (2026) 御廷谣
Summary: Meng Tinghui ft Wu Jin Yan, an orphaned girl determined to change her fate through the imperial examinations, crosses paths with a young man who turns out to be the new emperor, Ying Gua ft Chen Zhe Yuan. The two team up to root out corrupt officials and bandits in Shazhou, and Ying Gua, impressed by her abilities, secretly helps her make her way to the capital to sit for the exams. After arriving in the capital, she is appointed as head of the Investigation Bureau. Through their work, Ying Gua and Meng Ting Hui slowly develop feelings for one another, and after navigating a mystery surrounding her origins, resistance at court, and turmoil on the frontier, they finally put down the rebellion, restore order to the government, and stand together to protect the realm and its people.

Overall Thoughts
Wu Jin Yan is back in this costume revenge romance drama. It’s a 大女主 show or female dominant drama that at least isn’t a rebirth story. While at first, I was like, oh, ok the first 10 episodes weren’t bad, the drama then fell apart and I’m VISCERALLY angry at what happened afterwards.
For ONCE, it’s not the acting that’s the problem. Is Wu Jin Yan my favorite actress or the best actress? No. She’s basically in her comfort zone of this 大女主复仇记 (dominant-female-lead revenge story) drama. She acts the same way as she did in The Story of YanXi Palace and The Double. She has that ruthlessness and enough acting capability that differentiates her from other recent female leads though I do note a lot of her acting is carried by her voice dub or voice actress.
As for the rest of the cast? Chen Zhe Yuan as the Emperor Ying Gua is fine, though I liked him as Feng Sui Ge better in Fated Hearts. Zhao Zhao Yi and Zhang Nan as the second and third female leads are also fine. Some people didn’t like Zhao Zhao Yi for her enunciation and for how her character can be a little 咋咋呼呼 (loud/theatrical). But at the very least, they didn’t break the immersion of the story and fit their roles well.
But MY GOD, I just want to 吐槽 (rant about/roast) because the production of this drama is sooo bad. Here’s the thing. The 人物设定 (character setup) for most of the characters was actually quite strong. But the execution WAS TERRIBLE.
This drama is really juggling three genres at once: 权谋 (political intrigue), 大女主 (dominant female lead), and 爱情 (romance) and unfortunately was not able to pull off any of them super well. The political intrigue had real potential. I thought Chen Zhe Yuan’s Ying Gua or the Emperor was genuinely the most compelling character in the whole show. We usually don’t see a 少年天子 or a young prince running around. Normally it’s a prince or a duke or a marquis. But here, you actually see him think through problems as a young capable man, and one with power. As for Meng Ting Hui? The girlboss storyline starts strong before collapsing. I would say the political intrigue and the female lead aspects of the show both collapsed when romance entered the fray. The romance storyline was by far the WORST part of this drama and completely dragged down the rest of the show. And it’s not necessarily the lack of chemistry, but instead, how the editing happened.
Overall though, this drama just feels like the writers had all of these grand plans. They wanted to get from point A to point B for some big reveal. But they didn’t know how to get there so they just threw in a bunch of different scenes together to say tada! We’re here! Here’s also a piece from the political intrigue part, and some girl boss aspects but OH don’t forget the romance too! I absolutely blame the writers and director for this sloppy work.
What I Liked
Overall Strong Character Design/Set up (人物设定）
- 大女主爽剧 (Dominant Female Lead) — The first 10 episodes or so of this drama were actually fine. You get Meng Ting Hui’s backstory and you saw her solve most of her own problems. Ying Gua, the main male lead, didn’t jump in to randomly save the main female lead. Instead, Meng Ting Hui had to save herself multiple times from certain death. That’s where I was like yass okay, girl go get it! Like here, Ying Gua was actually surprised to see that she broke out of prison. Sure he said they needed to close the trap but he didn’t go out of his way to rescue her out of prison. She did that herself.
- During the cheating scandal, she used her own wits and abilities to try to find justice. And when she was locked up in a prison cell and flames were all around her, she managed to break weakened bars open to escape. I was holding my breath to see if Ying Gua would save her but no, she managed to run out herself. He saved her at the last second but 90% was her.
- 权谋 (Political Intrigue) — For me personally, Ying Gua is actually the most compelling person in this drama. He’s a young emperor with the whole world on his shoulders and he’s doing his best to try to bring peace. It is why he’s willing to allow women to take the imperial exams and join court. He is observant of possible threats, and he’s able to connect the dots to investigate oddities. Importantly, he doesn’t shy away from the fact that his affections are tied to someone who is more than meets the eye. We’ve seen so many princes fight for the throne but very rarely have we seen in recent dramas what it actually means to be Emperor.
- 姐妹情 (Sisterhood) – I’m so happy that there wasn’t any of that cliché girl-on-girl infighting over a guy in this drama. Instead, Meng Ting Hui, Yan Fu Zhi, and Shen Zhi Li were all very caring towards each other. They were there to bring each other up, not put each other down. While quite a few recent dramas over the last few years had moved towards this trend, it’s still a welcome framework for the show. You don’t have to worry about your sisters backstabbing you here. Sometimes it was over the top but it’s nice to see Meng Ting Hui’s girlfriends having her back.
Guo Pin Chao’s Acting
Honestly? I feel like he had a blast in this role. I’ve watched him since he was in 斗鱼 (Dou Yu) from what, 20+ years ago? And I gotta say, he still looks FANTASTIC. I don’t think he’s had such a fun character to play, like ever, where he gets to have so much range. Again, the voice actor gets credit too, but at least you don’t feel like the voice actor did all the work compared to some other actors.
What I Disliked
爱情 (Romance) — The Worst Part of This Drama due to HORRIBLE Editing and Plot Editing
What frustrated me about this drama, is NOT the romance itself, but how it was manifested on screen. The chemistry between Chen Zhe Yuan and Wu Jin Yan and their characters Ying Gua and Meng Ting Hui was better than expected. You could see where the attraction came from as they work together on various challenges at court. There is that tension and you want them to be together. What killed me were the romance SCENES of them going out on dates that were really out of place. It was absolutely egregious in episodes 22-24 or so. This was problematic for BOTH Yan Fu Zhi’s storyline and Meng Ting Hui’s storyline.
First of all, all of you are on a mission to find bad guys and you bring a bunch of ladies who can’t fight? Is this a mission or a group dating excursion? And then you have literally a scene of people mind controlled by pills acting like terrible zombies attacking people, then immediately the next scene Yan Gu Zhi and Song Zhi Li are confessing their love and making out. Uhhh hello? I literally burst out laughing when I saw this.
You also have the Emperor and Meng Ting Hui confess their feelings and this awkward romantic getaway, and then the next scene, the antagonist is fake crying and scheming in front of the casket of his dead wife.
This is when I was like – you know what, I’m done. I’m totally done.
I feel like the editors and writers had absolutely NO idea how to effectively go from point A to point B. They were like “we have this big plot twist or reveal we have to get to, but we also have this romance storyline to incorporate because that’s what we think everyone wants to watch”.
What would’ve made this a much more compelling story is if the romance was always 点到为止 (restrained/hinted at rather than actually shown). That you didn’t have a ton of make-out scenes that seemed forced. You want that “just out of reach” moment where there’s the strong affection. This would’ve made their affection make a lot more sense. You could still get to the big story lines WITHOUT the way these romance beats were forced into the pacing, which undermined both the pace of the show AND the intelligence of the characters.
Inconsistencies for the characters in the second half of the drama
Female lead Meng Ting Hui – When Meng Ting Hui goes to court, a lot of her brains seemingly went away. She used a lot of brute force to attack her foes at court, which means that she needed the support of the Emperor in order to accomplish anything. There wasn’t much finesse or skill to how she handled problems. The Emperor was there to 兜底 (bail her out/cover for her), which undercut her own effectiveness. It just felt like she lost a lot of her street smarts when pressured at court. I just expected more interesting ways to handle problems at court but she just felt like an attack dog.
Male Lead Ying Gua – The problem with this drama is they GIVE him the brains for these big-picture items. He actually talks to his court officials about his suspicions and concerns but then you’re like… okay…? so why are you pursuing a relationship with someone you KNOW might have a problematic past? It just feels like again, the writers needed to get to the point where the two characters confess their feelings to move to the next part of the plot that then the writers completely undermine the character set up they created at the beginning of the show.
I totally blame the writers here for not knowing how to write these characters properly.
The Costumes
Most of the time I’m gushing about how I adore the costumes for a costume historical romance drama. This time? Nope. Sorry, but I’m not a huge fan of the Emperor’s clothing designs. There’s too much going on from a pattern perspective, such that each time he wears his dragon robes, I’m like UGH TOO DISTRACTING AH!!!! And then also the cut of his clothes? Male Chinese actors are stuck in this weird zone where they want to be fit but also thin. So then I feel like the costume designer made him bulkier by making the shoulders of his outfit MUCH wider and his arms much more puffy, but then slimmed down the waist. It just looks weird. He feels like a kid dressing up in adult clothes. I have not 吐槽 a costume, I don’t think, EVER. And the fact that I am spending significant time on this? Tells you how much I DIDN’T like it.
镜头 (Cinematography) — WHAT IS UP WITH THE DIRECT FACE SHOTS?
I absolutely hated the direct face camera shots that were frequently used in this drama. I don’t know why the director thought they were a good idea. I don’t think I’ve ever watched a drama where I so obviously noticed these 怼脸镜头 or these close up face shots that I got secondhand embarrassment from those scenes. I’m embarrassed for the actors for having to act like that directly INTO the camera, and then I’m getting embarrassed WATCHING those scenes. They were so awkward and weird and just overall uncomfortable. ESPECIALLY for romance scenes. When used sparingly, these types of scenes or camera angles are fine! But in this drama, ugh, it was soooo distracting.
As you can see, I’m more pissed off at the director and writers than anyone else. I checked the director’s BaiKe page and it seems like this is the first drama they helmed as lead director. Welp, I’m steering clear from any dramas they make in the future.
What a waste of potential. Shake my head.

I sort of agree with most of the criticism above. Some further comments: The acting was mostly good within the constraints of the script, and they were substantial. Wu Jinyan performed quite well given that her character was inconsistently written. As noted, the intellectual qualities that Meng Tinghui is supposed to possess seem mostly absent whenever she takes action. Hardly any strategic planning, just acting on impulse. The role of the emperor Ying Gua is likewise not well scripted. He doesn’t get much character development. Then there is a huge missed opportunity. The backstory of Meng Tinghui and of Yin Qing is revealed too late in the show. It could have been used to create far more mystery, suspense, conflict and drama. It could also have introduced another party protecting Meng Tinghui and another romantic interest for her. The monopoly that the emperor holds over her as romantic interest and protector is overly repetitive as the show progresses. Moreover, the status that Meng Tinghui actually possesses as part of her original identity would have made for a more interesting challenge for the emperor. Instead, the script paints out other figures like the tiger roar gang baron, but without purpose for the overarching plot. A lot of such filler material should have been traded for making the lead figures and their relationship more interesting.
