Dry humor adds much needed levity to this genre

This is such a bingeable show because of the dry humor throughout. In episode one, I absolutely died laughing at the fact that police officer Zhang Yi Ang (the male lead) organized a running race for a bunch of retired police officers and one of them landed in the hospital. The looks on other retirees faces when Zhang Yi Ang spoke to the comatose ex-officer’s wife literally had me burst out laughing. This has absolutely no consequence to the rest of the episodes or the crimes that happen later but really establishes the tone of what to expect for the drama.

Sure, there are serious moments but the underlying tone of the show is that it’s going to be rather ridiculous and you’re in for a fun ride. This is a great show to decompress to because you have absolutely no idea how a crime is either going to occur or how it’s going to be solved. What’s so great is that many of the confessions happen without Zhang Yi Ang and team saying a word. They just happen to be at the right place at the right time and the criminals all can’t handle any ounce of pressure and immediately confess to stuff that many the police officers didn’t even realize was in play. 

Is this entirely realistic that criminals with the exact evidence that Zhang Yi Ang and team needs just so happen to hail them down for a cab ride? No. But it’s entertaining nonetheless. 

Sound Editing/Background Music is superb

One of the best aspects of this show are the sound effects that add a tone of lightheartedness and brevity to various scenes. It’s as if the show knows how ridiculous many of the scenes are and sounds are added to help you in on the joke. My favorite is the background tune of “怀疑” or “suspicious” where the main lead says you should be “suspicious of your suspicion”. As you watch the show, you’ll inevitably hear the “huaaaiii yiiii” start playing with something questionable is afoot. 

Wang Xiao and Wang Chuan Jun’s acting

Wang Xiao somehow managed to create a very dopey police officer. Notice his walking gait and how he tucks in his chin sometimes that almost causes a double chin such that he is looking up a lot rather than sneering or looking down on you. This plus an almost empty gaze when he’s looking around is the opposite of an imposing, menacing police chief and is exactly what makes Zhang Yi Ang’s abilities to somehow find serial killers even more hilarious because he’s not some badass macho type man. But yet, you cannot underestimate how effective he is. 

As for Wang Chuan Jun, he play’s the crime leader of the show, Zhou Rong. He has some type of anxiety disorder and takes medication to calm down. To help add to the anxiousness, actor Wang Chuan Jun added facial tics to the character whenever he is stressed to make this character more believable, and it absolutely worked. Come to think of it, as you watch the show, you totally understand WHY Zhou Rong needs medication. I absolutely would if I had “brothers” or staff members like he does. Hahahahaha.

Love Almighty 

Can we talk about how much love there is between the various criminals? Lu Yi Bo is head over heels in love with Qi Qi and willing to give his life up for her. He even betrayed Zhou Rong because he believed Zhou Rong was having an affair with Qi Qi. However, Zhou Rong immediately forgave him when Lu Yi Bo revealed that the reason he snapped was because he… cannot do the deed. Zhou Rong was more worried about his bro in that moment than about the betrayal itself. What a guy. (And Zhou Rong’s expression when he heard the truth immediately became an online meme lol.)

There are plenty of other examples throughout the show. Hu Jian Ren was willing to stand in front of a bullet for Zhou Rong. Lang Bo Wen and Lang Bo Tu are brothers who care deeply for each other. Criminal pairs Liu Chao and Fang Zhi, Zhu Yi Fei and Huo Zheng, and several others are all exceedingly close. Even while committing various crimes, the bonds between them are genuinely touching.
