Overall Thoughts

This show is your romance novel come to life where you have a handsome male lead who is stoic, cunning and physically imposing but falls head over heals in love with the young spunky and wealthy girl. Only to her, does he exhibit his soft side and any sense of fairness goes out the window when it comes to making sure she is safe. If you want to watch a low stakes, heart fluttering romance with amazing chemistry to pass the time with only modestly interesting side plots? This is a good show to watch. The rest of the show beyond the main pair isn’t super interesting so take that for what it’s worth.

I came in with no expectations of A Splendid Match. And to be quite honest, the first half of this drama was a 6.5 for me. It had weak antagonists, an underdeveloped female lead that just so happens to be all knowing, and a plot that retread a lot of the same tropes as other shows. But Ren Min and Ci Sha kept pulling me back, and by the time the couple fully got together, I was obsessed. The final score is a 7, with the chemistry of the main pair solely responsible for that upgrade. I

t seems like I’m not alone in liking the main pair because viewership stats actually IMPROVED for this show in the second half of the drama when the main couple get together, which I would say is quite rare. I personally started watching when there were 16 episodes out and then was eagerly “chasing” each episode afterwards. No doubt, this pairing will be on my list of favorite couples for the year.

What I Liked

Chemistry between the main leads

This drama is entirely elevated by the chemistry and romance between the main leads. Ren Min and Ci Sha knock it out of the park in this show with how well they pair together. I remember watching 锦绣安宁 or the Rise of Ning where Ren Min played the female lead and Ci Sha was the second male lead and really liking these two as a couple (sorry Zhang Wan Yi). I’m glad they were able to bring us such a strong pairing in this drama where they finally end up together. I haven’t “ke CP” or really shipped a romance in a while and I’m absolutely adoring shipping them. They’re so cute together both on screen in the drama and in all the behind the scenes clips I’ve seen of them.  I am absolutely exasperated by people online shipping the second male lead because the level of chemistry just isn’t there compared to the main couple.

One thing I think this drama did really well, and is something that is missing in many of these types of romance dramas, is that there’s actual sexual tension between the main couple. Ci Sha’s piercing gaze brings out that longing and matches well with Ren Min’s blushing shyness. And, after the couple get together, they do behave like a couple truly in love with their physical affection. It seems natural to them, even if Ci Sha tries to be gentlemanly and reserved a lot of the times. Hahahahaha. Their romance is enough to offset problems with the plot and other issues I had with the show.

Ci Sha’s Chen Yan Yun

I thought the choice of casting Ci Sha for Chen Yan Yun was fantastic despite thinking that his acting could be improved, especially when he acts opposite Wu Gang (aka Chen Ping Ping from Joy of Life). Even though Ci Sha’s only 2 years older than Ren Min, he looks a lot older (probably much to his chagrin) but it fit this role perfectly because Chen Yan Yun is supposed to be quite a bit older than Gu Jin Zhao. What I adored about his pairing with Ren Min is twofold. 1) Chen Yan Yun as a character is more seasoned. He knows what he wants and isn’t afraid to be direct about his feelings. Unlike Chen Xuan Qing and Ye Xian who didn’t speak up when given the opportunity, Chen Yan Yun DID. And he was very direct in his pursual of Gu Jin Zhao while the other guys were very timid. Not only that, he provides unconditional support to Gu Jin Zhao. What’s not to like about a guy like that? 2) Ci Sha’s physique is heart throbbing. Having trained for the movie, Creation of the Gods, he is actually skilled on horseback, archery and martial arts.  On screen, he is able to pick up Ren Min/Gu Jin Zhao with ease and she just melts into him when they hug. His physique and the ease of which he is able to physically support Gu Jin Zhao adds to the physical chemistry of this show and why it works so well.

Beautiful costumes, hairstyles and accessories

You can tell this isn’t a huge budget show but the money spent on the costumes and hairstyles is well appreciated. Even though this is set in a fictional dynasty of Da Yan, it’s clear that it is based off of the Ming Dynasty. I thought the hairstyles in particular suited each stage of Gu Jin Zhao’s life, from when she just passed her coming of age ceremony to after she married. What really stood out to me were the accessories. I want whatever rings Gu Jin Zhao wears and I really liked the pearl accents in the hairstyles and on the back of the robes the women wear. Overall, this is a beautiful show to watch.

What Could've Been Better

Not enough build up on the backgrounds of the female lead

One of the gripes I had with the beginning of the drama is that we’re just supposed to accept that a young girl (yes I use girl here) aka the main female lead, Gu Jin Zhao, is supposed to be learned in the arts and business. Gu Jin Zhao is portrayed as exceptional. She can evaluate calligraphy and paintings with ease and leads businesses as if she’s had years of experience. While this I can kind of accept as there is mention of the Ji family being quite scholarly and invites well regarded teachers to teach the family, what baffles me is the horseback riding and archery skills. She is portrayed as being on par with Chen Yan Yun which theoretically COULD happen, but the drama doesn’t provide any background at all. She is shown as NOT being a good fighter with her maid, Qing Pu, doing most of the martial arts fighting when they get into trouble. So where is this top notch horseback riding and archery skill coming from? I’m probably the only one to notice but it really irked me that we’re supposed to just accept that Gu Jin Zhao is THE best person out there.

Apparently, the book the drama was based on had that”rebirth” trope where the female lead dies and is reborn with her memories and skills. That plugs the gap for a lot of information she WOULD have the second go around. The drama cut all of that out which overall I think was the right call, but I think it could’ve done better in adding more context to Gu Jin Zhao.

Uninteresting antagonist story lines

Surprisingly, I was actually quite invested in the political challenges that Chen Yan Yun and Ye Xian faced at court and thought those storylines were more interesting because is brought out the true capabilities of Chen Yan Yun and the fact that while Ye Xian can behave unpredictably in certain matters, in bigger, more important matters, he knows how to hold himself accountable. These court conflicts actually fleshed out why Chen Yan Yun is impressive and why we should like Ye Xian as a character beyond just a love interest for Gu Jin Zhao.

What bored me were the family conflicts, particularly from the Gu family and Gu Lian. On Gu Lian’s part, she’s definitely a low leveled antagonist that wouldn’t survive beyond 2-3 episodes in Empresses in the Palace. She is loud, obnoxious and not clever in her tactics to be that damaging. So when Gu Jin Zhao had to deal with her antics, I was really like…can we move on?

It just felt like Chen Yan Yun was operating on a completely different level than what Gu Jin Zhao had to deal with even though Gu Jin Zhao is capable enough on her own. That difference really detracted from the first half of the show.

SPOILER AHEAD – The other eye roll was Chen Xuan Qing. Ye Xian made for at least a sympathetic love interest to Gu Jin Zhao and you could really see why it broke her heart to not choose him (though he did lash her with a whip so that already left him out of the running). But Chen Xuan Qing??? He consciously made decision to not step forward to respond to Gu Jin Zhao’s feelings and became betrothed to someone else. But then comes back furious that she went and fell in love with another person? His behavior is quite like Qi Heng from The Story of Ming Lan. You can’t blame anyone but yourself for your actions and the fact that other people moved on. I was rolling my eyes the entire time he appeared in the last third of the show.

  1. This is not only my favorite drama of 2026 so far but, quite possibly, one of my favorites of all time and I’ve been watching Chinese dramas for over 20 years.

All three main leads nailed their roles, Winwin was a massive surprise at how superb he was as Ye Xian considering he’s only had a handful of roles in the past (his final scenes in particular were phenomenally well done), and Ren Min and Ci Sha are now my favorite C-drama couple ever.

Ci Sha especially was a joy, as I’ve loved him before in wuxia dramas but his performance in this one was on a completely new level, as he really understood the complexities of Chen Yan Yun’s character and portrayed them so well — as he created a man who was upright, moral and incredibly mature, but also cut off from his own emotions. Due, of course, to how his mother had treated him from being a child.

So much so, for the first few episodes, I had it in my head that Ci Sha was in his late 30s, due to his portrayal of CYY as a grave and stalwart man, only for me to remember later he’s still only 29-years-old.

Throw in that he’s been training in martial arts for several decades, meaning that his fight scenes are some of the best I’ve seen, and that he had superb chemistry with Ren Min, especially in their more intimate scenes, and, for me, I couldn’t have loved his performance more.

An easy 10/10 drama for me, and one that has now gone on my very very very short list of ‘CDramas to Watch a 2nd Time’.
