Final Rating 6.7/10 – Cute romantic fluff with low relatively low stakes. I actually quite enjoyed this for a bingeworthy show. It’s not groundbreaking and you can’t think too closely about the plot but if you’re just looking for something sweet, this is sufficient fodder.

Plot Overview
Jian Ming Shu ft Lu Yu Xiao of the wealthy Jian Family runs a jewelry store in the town of Jiang Lin. She grew up with Lu Chang ft Wang Zi Qi and has always liked him. Her father helps kidnap Lu Chang to force Ming Shu and Lu Chang to marry but he refuses on that wedding night. This breaks her heart but she agrees to let him go.
However, soon after, her entire family is slaughtered and she herself is almost killed. Ming Shu falls from a cliff but is fortunately rescued by Lu Chang. She wakes up and doesn’t remember anything. To protect her from people who still want to kill her, Lu Chang pretends that Ming Shu is his younger sister. The two, along with Lu Chang’s mother, head to the Capital for the imperial examinations. Meanwhile, Lu Chang is also focused on trying to gather clues to help restore his teacher’s name. His teacher was falsely accused of corruption and killed. Lu Chang refuses to believe this and works with Song Qian Zhao, a young man they meet on the way to the Capital, to help the Prince of Rui with this endeavor.

Overall Thoughts
I wasn’t originally looking to pick this up but decided to give it a shot since nothing else airing was piquing my interest. It’s not a drama you can think too closely about the plot as then most things wouldn’t be feasible and it’s maybe 5 episodes too long but, I watched everything on 2x speed and did watch the entire thing which means it cleared that bar of watchability for me.
There are lots of cliches in it and tropes that we’ve seen over and over again in recent dramas though, so no new ground is being tread. Some examples include: 1) The main female lead is a smart, spunky and fair woman that attracts the main male lead and the 2nd male lead into falling in love with her. 2) This is another story where the female lead’s family comes from money and she is skilled at running a jewelry business while her love is a scholar 3) princes vying for the throne in the background 4) the male lead’s teacher is unfairly accused and killed so they have to try to overturn that wrongful conviction.
This drama reminds me a whole lot of The Rise of Ning from last year as they have many similar story beats but the chemistry between Wang Zi Qi and Lu Yu Xiao plus Wang Hong Yi as the 2nd male lead is much better than what we got in the Rise of Ning. Though I still felt the passion or romantic chemistry could’ve been a tad stronger, Wang Zi Qi and Lu Yu Xiao were more natural in their interactions.
Sadly, this drama did not do too well ratings wise both in terms of viewership and in terms of douban. It only breached 23000 on Tencent’s popularity index and currently has a 5.1 on douban. I can see it being a “blander” viewing experience. It’s not passionate enough to solicit an urgent chase but it’s overall just sweet.
Female lead Lu Yu Xiao though is the center of most of the commentary. People online say she is too plain. Criticism is hurled at her that she needs to lose weight and work on her posture. I thought she was fine figure wise and generally I am not a fan of telling people they need to lose weight but I can see why she is being called plain. She doesn’t necessarily stand out in a sea of other beautiful actresses and she definitely is someone who really needs good hairstyle and makeup to help her stand out. Some of the hairstyles in this show did not do her any favors.
Overall, this is a cute, romantic show that will likely not be too memorable but will scratch that itch if you want something sweet to put on in the background.

Let's Talk Relationships
- Brother/Sister dynamic – I do think that this drama did a better job of leveraging that brother/sister dynamic than in the Rise of Ning. Lu Chang rescued Ming Shu after rejecting her marriage but pretended he was her brother to protect her from being killed by assassins. He knew the entire time she was not his actual sister and was even in the awkward position of having rejected her in the past. On her part, she may have forgotten who he was but I guess her “heart” knew she loved him. That made the eventual relationship less incestuous to me.
- Song Qing Zhao – rockstar second male lead: I usually ship the main couple but this time, I really struggled to do so because Song Qing Zhao was so great! Son of a duke, fun, kind, caring, respectful. If I were any woman, I totally would’ve gone with Qing Zhao rather than be with Lu Chang. I mean, Lu Chang is great but his literal only “better” selling point is that Ming Shu loved him before she met Qing Zhao. I couldn’t fully justify why Ming Shu should be with Lu Chang over Qing Zhao. Side note, we’ve talked about how Zhang Wan Yi has had great output over the last year, Wang Hong Yi is actually the one who has been EVERYWHERE. I think he’s been a supporting cast member in like 6-7 dramas that’s aired in the last year. That’s really impressive!
- Prince of Rui and Shu Jun: Now this couple is the one that I really shipped. The Prince of Rui was THE best man in this drama and could’ve been the male lead in another story. He did not marry for love, only for political gain but was respectful towards Shu Zhen. She was that strong independent woman who didn’t grovel to him and lived her own life but was quite competent in her role as his wife. He had no prior relationships and didn’t know much about love so it was really quite cute when these two fell in love. I cared more about this couple than what was going on with Ming Shu and Lu Chang. I’m hoping that these two have their true happily ever after which is tough given he’s a prince, but one can dream. They are the “ideal” dream couple

What Made Me Roll My Eyes
I talked about so many similar tropes from other dramas that are in this show. It’s inevitable. The below didn’t necessarily impede the viewing experience but it’s just like “of course, this happened”. We gotta just go with the flow.
- Rich/powerful/connected – Are we surprised that the people that Lu Chang and Ming Shu rescue and happen upon just so happens to be the son of a duke (Song Qian Zhao) and then the people Ming Shu later helps because the wife of a prince. One of her best friends is also royalty. In one fell swoop, she is a commoner with some of the most important connections in the land.
- Running a business – Ming Shu gets the funds to start her own business which, from the other dramas we’ve seen, is not an easy thing to do. She’s creating jewelry but I guess she somehow has the connections to create the jewelry, design everything, hire people and have the shop up and running. She is then able to run off for periods at a time to live in the school yard with Lu Chang and Song Qian Zhao to investigate a fellow student or pretend to be a dancer. Who’s running the business? Also, I think this must be some beautiful utopia that princesses can just come and run businesses without concerns for safety.
- Love story for the antagonists – I’ll be honest, the weakest part of the drama is the Prince of Yu’s tragic/weird storyline with Su Tang Li. I’m not going to spoil it here but this connection really did not make any sense to me. So much so that in the finale, the interactions between these two were so forced that on one hand I was getting second hand embarrassment for the other people standing in the room watching their speech play out, on the other, I was about to burst out laughing for how ridiculous it all was. I really did not care for their storyline.
