Warnings – Death, demons

Rating: 6.5/10. A drama that is far too in love with its own beauty that hid an otherwise interesting enough plot underneath. While the show boasts a big production and a gorgeous cast, the pacing and editing are the real villains here that robbed the drama of the emotional resonance it deserved

Overall Thoughts

Veil of Shadows is the fastest drama on Youku to breach 10,000 this year so far, but per episode views pale in comparison to Pursuit of Jade and will land in only the average viewership range for this show.

This is one of those interesting dramas where all four main leads, two women and two men, are given equal billing on all posters and marketing material, which has apparently led to a lot of fighting amongst the different fanbases. Chen Du Ling’s fans, for example, are upset she’s not getting as much screentime as other members of the cast.

But how is the drama itself?

This drama is absolutely stunning to look at. You literally cannot go wrong with Ju Jing Yi and Chen Du Ling as your main female leads with their porcelain skin, ethereal hairstyles, elaborate costumes. Every scene with them on screen is a treat for the eyes. The large cast of men is also quite welcomed eye candy. The sets, cinematography, and frankly the entire cast, all very handsome, make this a thoroughly gorgeous watch. If you’re looking for something beautiful to binge on a weekend, this checks that box effortlessly.

The catch? The overwhelming criticism of this drama is that it watches too much like a music video, and honestly, that tracks. The pacing is slow enough that I, and apparently a lot of people on the internet, watched it on 1.5x speed just to get through it. That’s not necessarily a dealbreaker if you’re looking for something beautiful to binge on a weekend, but it does tell you something about where the drama’s priorities lie. It would rather hold on a billowing robe for five seconds than let a plot beat breathe.

As for the plot, I went in cold to this drama with very little expectation and the premise is actually decently unique with some interesting twists and turns. The drama became more intriguing after the first subplot and we see more threads between each of the characters. This is one of the dramas where I would say the story/plot is more interesting, particularly in the middle part of the show, than the ultimate execution of the drama from an acting and pacing perspective.

What I Liked

Visually stunning drama

  • Cast, costumes and hairstyles – What a treat for the eyes when we get to see such a beautiful cast. Ju Jing Yi, Chen Du Ling in particular are stunning and the costumes and hairstyles are elaborate, varied and intricate such that each new outfit is a delight on screen. There are also moments where various members of the cast revert to their “animal demon” forms and those are also similarly visually stunning. The beauty also extends to the male members of the cast where even the side or supporting characters are quite handsome.
  • Cinematography There are genuine moments of visual artistry here beyond just “look at the pretty cast.” The standout for me: the scene where Lu Wu Yi is under house arrest, bathed in deep golden sunset light. That was a beautiful, intentional choice and there were many examples of such beautiful moments throughout the drama.

Wu Wang Yan and Wu Shi Guang’s love story

It took me quite a while to “get” the attraction between Ji Ling and Lu Wu Yi but Wu Wang Yan and Wu Shi Guan’s romance is in a completely different league from the first couple, particularly from their storyline in the Meteorite dream realm. Their interactions feel natural, their emotional beats land, and the weight of having spent years together in the dream realm actually comes through on screen. Their relationship and interactions feel more mature and genuinely compelling as deep rooted affection. I wish we saw more of their relationship and interactions on screen.

Contained enough storyline

You know what? I actually didn’t mind the broader story line/plot when the director actually moved the story along. There are enough interesting twists and turns around who each character is and what their backstory and motivations are to have kept me engaged enough (though often times at 1.5x) speed.

What Suffered

Is this intended to be a music video? Or a full length drama?

While I praised the beauty of this show,  there’s a specific directing choice throughout where pretty much every time a cast member shows up in an action or epic sequence, you get a lengthy slow shot with billowing robes, a near-superhero pose, a sustained “look at how beautiful this person is” moment. And look, the show IS beautiful. But it happens so often, for so many characters including supporting ones, that it meaningfully slows down the pace of the show. The main criticism of this drama online is that it looks too much like a music video, and I would generally agree because it is very self indulgent of making the show beautiful but the substance is lacking.

Pacing and Editing issues

This is the drama’s biggest and most damaging flaw. In an effort to elongate the “beauty” of the show, the pacing suffered heavily which means that viewers lose momentum in the show and get lost in the visuals rather than the story or plot itself. This is quite evident in the three dream realm sequences while in the meteorite as the 2nd side plot of the show. The three story lines are clearly ambitious and the goal is for all the characters to arrive at their revelations simultaneously. But the execution is not skillful enough to pull it off. The editing splices between realms so frequently and abruptly that it completely undermines heavy emotional beats, especially in Wu Wang Yan and Wu Shi Guang’s storyline. You’ll be in the middle of an emotionally charged moment and then, cut, you’re suddenly with a different couple in a completely different emotional register. Or, you jump over to Li Jie’s story line that is so utterly not interesting you’re like, GO BACK. This means that the emotions are never allowed to breathe. And that’s a shame, because the rare instances where a scene IS given room to breathe? That’s when the drama is most effective.

Mismatched side plots/stories

Because of heavy pacing issues, there are several side plots that ended up being rather uninteresting

What’s up with the music?

I actually burst out laughing several times during various scenes in the drama because the background music is just so absurd for the scene. There’s often times blaring EDM type music when one of the big bosses shows up and you’re just like “what type of show am I even watching?” Is this a video game show? Or a romantic fantasy one. This is more personal preference but i don’t think the music always tied to the vibe of what was portrayed on screen.
